Invalid MAC Address Netgear Router

Just thought I would jot this down for anybody getting the error message "Invalid MAC Address" when reserving IP addresses on their Netgear Router.

When I googled this I found a lot of solutions suggesting modifying config files and restoring from them - just too much trouble for a lazy chap like me. I got to pondering and reckoned that the address validation is done by javascript when you submit the page, not by the routers serverside software.

The easy solution is to enter the mac address that you want, disable javascript in your browser and then submit the reservation, now re-enable javascript and you are done. Jobs a diamond.

If this has helped you a comment would be welcome..............

thanks very much for that, a very smart way around it.

i was using chrome, got to the point where you need to enter the new IP address and then went "under chromes hood" disabled javascript then submitted. worked like a charm :D

  10. This works

If you temporarily disable MAC Filtering on the router then the iPhone will be able to connect. Then look in Attached Devices to confirm that the iPhone is connected.
Once you've seen it in there then you can add it to the Access List from the "Available Wireless Stations" list.

For some reason it accepts the MAC Address as valid once it's already seen it!

  15. What a brilliant idea! Thanks very much.

I manage the router remotely so I was a bit nervous to do the back up/restore config and this worked perfectly well :-)

  16. I changed it by first entering 00-00-00-00-00-00 as the MAC address, then [apply], then enter overwrite the zeros with the correct address.

  17. Not working here (DGN 2000)
In the "add" dialog, I entered IP, Mac and name; disabled JavaScript; press "add".
    ==>Frame turns blank.
Re-enable java script; refresh page; back to LAN configuration
==> no change to reserved addresses.

  22. A quick search reveals this as most similar to my issue w/a Netgear CGD24N.
Alas your workaround will not work!:( Running Firefox 12.0 (latest stable release).
There's no other solutions out there that I've found yet...
It used to work fine, it's like it's hit some kind of limit on many reserved mac addresses are allowed.

  23. I'm not even trying to reserve an IP address.
I'm merely trying to add the mac address to the allowlist.
So that it can be allocated an IP address via DHCP.
My only option is to change from allowlist to allowany.

  25. Thanks. It works. A pita to have to keep turning javascript on and off but hey. Laziness is the key here. I will sometimes work very hard to do the easy thing. People who just come up with a complicated solution are the cause of most of these problems anyway :) See http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/The_Complicator_0x27_s_Gloves.aspx.

  31. Hi Thanks, works perfect for me using waterfox. You have to enable Javascript to access the portal, go to the relevent section to add MAC reservation, add the details IP, MAC, Name and THEN you disable javascript and Submit the form.
I found it difficult doing the above using Chrome, as the page kept refreshing when you change the Javascript setting.
    Good find!.
